What is Spray Foam Insulation?

Spray foam insulation is the only insulation product that insulates and air seals in one step. It is sprayed on as a liquid and then expands and hardens to fill the tiny gaps and cracks that leak valuable air.

It comes in two forms: open-cell and closed-cell.

  • Open-cell spray foam is a lightweight foam that is vapor permeable and offers a relatively high R-value of 3.8 per inch. It’s more affordable than closed-cell foam and is great for interior applications in moderate climates.

  • Closed-cell spray foam is denser and provides both an air and vapor barrier. It has a high R-value of 7.2 per inch and is best for moisture-prone areas. It also adds structural strength to your home.

Where are the best places to insulate? The three places that make the biggest energy impact are your attic, crawl space and exterior walls.

Attic Roofline

We install spray foam along the attic roofline to prevent unwanted air from entering or escaping your attic. This creates a sealed, unvented area that keeps your attic and your living space below comfortable all year long. When upgrading your attic insulation with spray foam it’s imperative that any previous insulation, such as fiberglass, is completely removed beforehand.

Crawl Space

Your crawl space can affect the energy efficiency and air quality of the floor above. It’s important to first lay a vapor barrier on the crawl space floor to prevent moisture. Then your crawl space walls should be insulated with closed-cell spray foam insulation. This will insulate, seal air leaks, and help protect your crawl space from incoming moisture. Your upper floor will have healthier air and more even temps.  

Exterior Walls

Many homes have little to no insulation in their exterior walls. Adding spray foam to the interior side of your outside walls protects your home from drafts and wasted energy. This can be tricky to add in existing homes. It’s easiest to add spray foam to open wall cavities.
