What is Spray Foam Insulation?

Residential Addition

Spray foam insulation is the only insulation product that insulates and air seals in one step. It is sprayed on as a liquid and then expands and hardens to fill the tiny gaps and cracks that leak valuable air.

It comes in two forms: open-cell and closed-cell.

  • Open-cell spray foam is a lightweight foam that is vapor permeable and offers a relatively high R-value of 3.8 per inch. It’s more affordable than closed-cell foam and is great for interior applications in moderate climates.

  • Closed-cell spray foam is denser and provides both an air and vapor barrier. It has a high R-value of 7.2 per inch and is best for moisture-prone areas. It also adds structural strength to your home.

The Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation

Choosing spray foam for your existing home is a wise decision that will reap years of benefits. Spray foam offers:

  • Excellent air sealing to reduce drafts and energy loss.
  • High R-values to effectively stop heat transfer.
  • A long lifespan without settling or degrading.
  • Moisture control to help prevent mold and mildew (closed-cell foam only).
  • Lower energy bills.
  • Improved indoor air quality.
  • Less stress on your HVAC system thanks to better energy efficiency.
