Open Cell Foam
Spray foam insulation is a two-in-one product, insulating and air sealing in one step. Unlike fiberglass insulation, spray foam insulation expands when applied and completely fills a cavity to prevent air leakage and keep energy bills low.
The first, open cell spray foam, is less dense as the cells in the foam are open rather than staying intact. Open cell spray foam has a density of 0.5 pounds per cubic foot. It consists of cells of foam that are not completely closed. The cells are broken and air fills all the “open” space inside the material. Open cell spray foam insulation has an R-value of 3.4 to 4.5 per inch.
